The 2014 Billboard Music Awards aired Sunday night from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Some celebs managed to dazzle in a career-making spotlight; others couldn't quite seize the moment.

The Australian pop rock band 5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS) performed their new hit single, “She Looks So Perfect.” The day marked their first ever major performance at an awards show.

If the guys felt nervous, they certainly didn't show it. The crowd completely consumed their guitar-bound forearms, and torn and sleeveless shirts.  5SOS tag-teamed their vocals spectacularly, and added edge to their performance with classic rock-inspired leaps. Though young and new to the spotlight, they understood the moment and delivered the chart-topping song in style.

Apparently, 5SOS delivers a quality performance even without a supportive or accurate introduction. Keeping Up With the Kardashians star Kendall Jenner experienced some difficulty during her first time at bat.

Excited to be a first-time announcer at an awards show, Kendall tweeted and instagrammed hours before the event: “I got my party pants on #Billboards.” She boasted and posted a picture of her stunning outfit—a pair of sleek baggy pants and a tantalizingly revealing shirt.

With total confidence, she stuttered into the microphone: “And now we welcome, One….”, before she flushed red and bent over in embarrassment.  During her intro of the Aussie band, Kendall almost introduced them as One Direction.  She tried to play her flub off. She giggled nervously and tried to make fun of herself: “Guys, I’m the worst reader!” She simpered, then giggled again. She couldn't manage to enunciate “5 Seconds of Summer.” The director cut to the boys on stage before she could recover.

Immediately, a new hashtag trended: #kendallyouhadonejob.  In response, Kendall avidly blamed her poor sight of the teleprompter.  The 18 year-old tweeted, “Anndddd as if I wasn't nervous already!!!!  #NeverLeavinMyContactsAtHomeAgain!  #LOL  #LessonLearned.”

Somehow, I don’t think lack of vision was the problem. I think she suffered from a lack of Styles.

In February, Kendall broke up with notorious lady’s man, One Direction singer, Harry Styles. After being photographed at a dinner date in November, the two were spotted cozying up together from time to time. Both Kendall and Harry avoided commenting on the relationship. When Joan Rivers asked about a documented skiing trip, she and Harry took over New Year’s Eve, Kendall responded, “Joan, I go skiing with all my friends.”

The romantically secret rendezvous ended abruptly when it was reported that Kendall and Harry split due to work related issues. Kendall wanted to work on her modeling career. Harry’s commitment with One Direction’s stadium tour drew nearer.

Maybe memories of a steamy Harry Styles, skiing down a powdery mountain slope, crossed her mind. Maybe the only person “looking so perfect” to Kendall that night was Harry.

But Kendall wasn't the only Jenner to unintentionally, yet totally, dis 5 Seconds of Summer. Younger sister Kylie posted a video to Instagram early in May about the boy band from down under. In the video, Kylie’s two friends ecstatically belted out the words to “She Looks So Perfect” in the car, as it played on the radio. They shook their hair around in Kylie’s face, on either side of her, while rocking out to the song. Kylie stared blankly, and raised her eyebrows.  She captioned the post “when you’re the only one who doesn't know the song.”

I can’t keep up with the Kardashians, but clearly they can’t keep up with 5SOS. I hope Kendall works on her awards show act.  She recently tweeted about not just announcing, but co-hosting the Much Music Video Awards. She wrote, “So excited!!! We’re co-hosting the MUCH MUSIC VIDEO AWARDS in Canada on June 15 on #Much!!”  She did tweet this two days before her disastrous showing at the BBMA’s. Maybe the pressure of playing herself on a TV show while also playing herself at multiple events caused a mini-meltdown.

My advice to Kendall: stick to modeling. Girl, you look good! We’ll work on that whole talking thing.  Baby steps.
